BACKGROUND: Oscar is perhaps one of the best known Jeannie bottle artists who has been painting Jeannie bottles for nearly two decades. Oscar did extensive research on the original prop bottle owned by Barbara Eden as well as having met with the original artist, Bob Purcell, who created the second season bottle style for the series. According to Oscar, Mr. Purcell provided him with the exact colors and paint numbers for each element of Jeannie’s bottle. Oscar requires purchasers to provide their own Jim Beam bottle as well as payment in advance. The process of obtaining a bottle from Oscar took nearly two and half months. Oscar does not maintain a web site but does keep a running add in the Blink online magazine. Due to his longevity and reputation, Barbara Eden, Larry Hagman, Sidney Sheldon and Johnny Carson all own second season prop replicas painted by Oscar. Oscar is also prominently featured in the Steve Cox book, “Dreaming of Jeannie: TV’s Prime Time in a Bottle” on pages 53 and 54. BOTTLE: Oscar uses the lighter mulberry color for his base coat and the entire design work is hand painted without the use of stencils or templates. According to Oscar he has painted so many bottles that he can almost paint the designs with his eyes closed. I do believe that Oscar has captured the colors of the original second season props perfectly. Oscar’s design work maintains good fidelity to the original prop bottle designs with one glaring exception. The window pattern around the base of the bottle is done in a loose curlicue pattern instead of the more exact and stylized pattern of the original prop. The design work is also too thin and lightly applied so that the designs washout from a short distance and are hard to make out. |
