So why did it take her four decades since the series ended its run to write a memoir about her life and career?

“Quite frankly, it scared the Dickens out of me,” Ms. Eden said in a telephone interview. “I was quite frightened of doing this. I’ve been asked several times, and it’s daunting to talk about yourself. It gets to the soft spots inside you.”

On Tuesday the Crown Archetype imprint of Random House’s Crown Publishing division said that it would release a memoir by Ms. Eden, called “Jeannie Out of the Bottle,” in the spring of 2011.

As its title implies, the book will have its share to say about “I Dream of Jeannie,” on which Ms. Eden played the mystically empowered title character from 1965 to 1970. “She’ll have a big voice in this story,” Ms. Eden said, “but a lot went on before Jeannie.”

Born in Tucson and raised in San Francisco, Ms. Eden, 75, studied singing at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and won the Miss San Francisco pageant in 1951 before moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Though she’d performed comedy with the likes of Johnny Carson and Lucille Ball, Ms. Eden said that “Jeannie” was “just another job” when the series, about a 2,000-year-old genie and the American astronaut who discovers her bottle, came on her radar.

Today we remember Vinton Hayworth on what would have been his 104th birthday. Vinton Hayworth played General Schaeffer on I Dream of Jeannie. Although Mr. Hayworth only appeared in three episodes of I Dream of Jeannie, playing both General Schaeffer and General Watson he made an indelible impression on so many fans. We miss you Mr. Hayworth and our thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends.

The true architects of the Jeannie Journal are each and every I Dream of Jeannie fan who has taken up residency, as of this writing 2040, and who visit each day to read the latest news, connect with friends, watch videos, share photos or just hang out in their virtual bottle. The Journal is not something any one person may lay claim to but rather the communal efforts of a cast of Djinn who have shared selflessly their love of I Dream of Jeannie and the outstanding cast & crew of I Dream of Jeannie, Barbara Eden, Larry Hagman, Bill Daily, Hayden Rorke, Emmaline Henry and Sidney Sheldon. The Jeannie Journal is constantly evolving through each of its editions, some reflecting the seasons, some the holidays while others events from I Dream of Jeannie. Through it all, it is the fans that make the Jeannie Journal all that it is by sharing the magic and love of I Dream of Jeannie.

When I secured the domain name jeanniejournal.com in 2002 I had only the vaguest ideas of creating an I Dream of Jeannie fan tribute with news at its core. Today the Journal has become and is in the process of becoming so much more for all fans of goodwill. So here is to the year just passed and the years to come! REFLECTIONS ON THE YEAR JUST PASSED…

Among all the remakes of classic TV shows out there, few have seen more attempts to reach the big screen than "I Dream of Jeannie."

A number of years ago -- almost all the way back, it seems, to the birth of Jeannie herself -- there was a script by "National Treasure" writers Cormac and Marianne Wibberley, who sought to offer a feature take on the Barbara Eden-Larry Hagman series. That didn't work out, so Sony brought on "Mulan" writer Rita Hsiao. That didn't make the grade either. "Bend It Like Beckham" director Gurinder Chadha was signed on to direct at one point, then fell off. Linsday Lohan was on board to star as Jeannie. That one really didn't work out. At some point the Nicole Kidman-Will Ferrell "Bewitched" came out and flopped. That didn't help.

It was all enough to make one wish they could just clap their hands together and will a version into existence.

Now producers and Sony have a better idea. According to sources' info, as well as a listing on a nice little development board called It's On the Grid, they've hired Sheila Callaghan, a writer on Showtime's "The United States of Tara," to offer her take. You have to give them credit; they're going out of the bottle -- er, box -- with Callaghan. The writer has written on a number of "Tara" episodes, but she's best known as a downtown New York playwright, writing an acclaimed retelling of James Joyce's "Ulysses" and a Reagan-era romantic drama set in Greece titled "Lascivious Something," among some other well-regarded work.
