For the five seasons that she starred on the classic television comedy “I Dream of Jeannie,” Barbara Eden could conjure up anything from valuable artwork to an elephant with a nod and a blink.
So why did it take her four decades since the series ended its run to write a memoir about her life and career?
“Quite frankly, it scared the Dickens out of me,” Ms. Eden said in a telephone interview. “I was quite frightened of doing this. I’ve been asked several times, and it’s daunting to talk about yourself. It gets to the soft spots inside you.”
On Tuesday the Crown Archetype imprint of Random House’s Crown Publishing division said that it would release a memoir by Ms. Eden, called “Jeannie Out of the Bottle,” in the spring of 2011.
As its title implies, the book will have its share to say about “I Dream of Jeannie,” on which Ms. Eden played the mystically empowered title character from 1965 to 1970. “She’ll have a big voice in this story,” Ms. Eden said, “but a lot went on before Jeannie.”
Born in Tucson and raised in San Francisco, Ms. Eden, 75, studied singing at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and won the Miss San Francisco pageant in 1951 before moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Though she’d performed comedy with the likes of Johnny Carson and Lucille Ball, Ms. Eden said that “Jeannie” was “just another job” when the series, about a 2,000-year-old genie and the American astronaut who discovers her bottle, came on her radar.

Vinton Hayworth
June 4, 1906 - May 21, 1970
Today we remember Vinton Hayworth on what would have been his 104th birthday. Vinton Hayworth played General Schaeffer on I Dream of Jeannie. Although Mr. Hayworth only appeared in three episodes of I Dream of Jeannie, playing both General Schaeffer and General Watson he made an indelible impression on so many fans. We miss you Mr. Hayworth and our thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends.

Hollywood celebrities frequently visit patients at VA hospitals, shaking hands, signing autographs and posing for photographs. But one famous television celebrity enjoys visiting with Veterans in Albuquerque, N.M., so much that he became a hospital volunteer.
Bill Daily starred as Major Roger Healey on television’s “I Dream of Jeannie” starting in 1965. The series about two astronauts and a beautiful genie in a bottle ended in 1970, after which he was a regular on “The Bob Newhart Show” from 1972 to 1978.
These days, the 82-year-old actor makes Albuquerque his home and continues to make his fans laugh every Wednesday when he visits Veterans at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center. Daily’s warm heart and gift of gab keep patients entertained for about four hours each week. Making patients laugh was just what Daily said he needed at this point in his life. “In my time, people died at age 50, and 60 was considered old,” Daily said. “So, all of a sudden, I’m 75 and I thought I could live another 15 years and I’ve got to do something. This year was the best Christmas I’ve ever had because I felt like I’m finally doing something.”
He’s been a hospital volunteer for nearly one year, and the room-to-room visits with Veterans fills a void in his life, he said. Some friends of his also volunteer at the medical center, and suggested he join them. When Daily first thought about coming to volunteer, he worried about doing just a stand-up routine. Realizing a routine would work just one time, he decided to simply meet with patients.
